Basic Mechanisms of Anesthetics

Anesthetics are used as a neuromuscular block or to induce unconsciousness to allow physicians to treat patients without causing pain.  Our scientists study the basic mechanisms of anesthetics to increase their understanding of how anesthetics alter consciousness and impact the nervous system at a molecular level.

Dr. Philip Morgan’s lab is currently studying how gas anesthetics cause unconsciousness at the cellular level.
