For residents

All resident pathway: This is a longitudinal course spanning CA1 through CA3 year, intended for all trainees during their anesthesiology residency training to gain an understanding of health care disparities, universal health coverage, and cross-cultural learning. Topics include an overview of anesthesia in global health, cultural humility and ethical principles, and hands on workshops and simulations for resource-limited settings.

Global health leadership pathway: This course is offered through the UW Department of Global Health during the CA-2 year. The month-long course consists of lectures, panel discussions, case studies, and field visits to local global health organizations, such as the Gates Foundation and PATH. Coursework occurs for a half-day in the morning, followed by clinical duties in the afternoon. Key themes include social determinants of health, health systems strengthening, program development and financing, and medical subspecialities in global health. We plan to enrich this with anesthesia specific material and discussion.

Journal club: Led by a resident-faculty pair, we host a biannual journal club to informally discuss advancements and challenges in global anesthesia.

ASA-Lifebox Resident Challenge: Lifebox is a global nonprofit that makes surgery and anesthesia safer for every patient, every time, through tools, training, and partnerships. Led by our residents, the ASA-Lifebox Resident Challenge fundraises to enhance the distribution of pulse oximeters and capnographs worldwide.

For fellows

Pediatric anesthesia global health lecture series: The series offer a unique perspective into pediatric anesthesia practices in different healthcare settings around the world, providing our fellows with a broader understanding of international healthcare challenges. This specialized lecture series seeks to stimulate professional development and growth, complimenting the core fellowship curriculum training. Topics include:

  • Why Global Health? The Intersection of Global Health & Pediatric Anesthesiology
  • Ensuring International Standards for Safe Clinical Practices
  • Sustainability in Educational Partnerships
  • Monitoring and Evaluating Programs in Global Health

Global health faculty-fellowship program: We offer a one-to-two year non-ACGME accredited faculty fellowship in Global Health and Anesthesiology. Our one-year program culminates in a capstone project and Graduate Certificate in Global Health. The two-year program includes additional coursework for a master’s thesis and MPH in Global Health. 60% of the fellowship year is devoted to educational opportunities and 40% of the fellowship year is devoted to time as a junior attending with clinical, supervisory, and call commitmentsFellows will spend part of the year(s) working in the field in a low- or middle-income country to learn about the unique factors involved in providing safe anesthetic care in these settings. A portion of this experience will also involve building a sustainable exchange of knowledge using fellow-led lectures and small group discussion on anesthesiology topics. Please contact uwgain@uw.edu if you have additional questions or are interested in applying.
