Focus

Dr. Morgan’s and Sedensky’s laboratory pioneered the use of C. elegans, a simple invertebrate, to understand the mechanism of action of volatile anesthetics and to understand anesthesia’s possible long-term effects on newborns and infants. Based on their studies in C. elegans, they have extended their studies to the mouse and are actively investigating how mitochondrial dysfunction controls the normal response to anesthetics. Recently, their laboratory has characterized a mechanism of action for the volatile anesthetics. Students will be able to contribute to the work by performing genetic studies with anesthetics primarily in C. elegans, but also in mice as time allows.
