Welcome From The Chair

About

We are privileged to be part of our department’s long and impressive history of excellence in innovation and collaboration. From the invention of the copper kettle vaporizer by Dr. Lucien Morris to the founding of the world’s first multidisciplinary pain clinic by Dr. John J. Bonica, UW Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine continues to be a national leader in our specialty.

Equity & Inclusion

We believe that a diverse and inclusive team is essential to achieving our mission and creating a supportive and enriching work environment. I am committed to fostering a culture that promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion, and encourages open communication, collaboration, and professional growth among our team members. As you peruse the ongoing work of our Diversity Council, you will see that its members are developing data-driven and collaborative initiatives in patient care, education, and research.

Clinical Care

Our department is comprised of highly skilled and compassionate anesthesiologists and pain medicine specialists who are committed to delivering safe and effective perioperative care and pain management to our patients, whether it be in the operating room, the critical care units, in the pain clinic, or in other clinical settings. Our faculty are leaders in their respective fields and serve in numerous clinical and administrative leadership roles across the entire spectrum of perioperative care and pain management.

Education

As an educational institution, we are dedicated to training the next generation of clinicians. Our educational programs are designed to teach trainee physicians the knowledge, skills and professionalism required for clinical excellence; promote compassionate patient care; inspire a sense of inquiry and life-long learning; and develop physician leaders in anesthesiology, pain medicine, and critical care for the 21st century.

Research

Our department is at the forefront of innovative research in the field of anesthesiology, critical care and pain medicine. Our faculty strive to advance medical science and improve perioperative clinical care by conducting state-of-the art pre-clinical, clinical, translational, and outcomes research.
