We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Marie Angèle Theárd has assumed the position of Vice Chair for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, effective July 1.
A passionate educator and clinician, Dr. Theárd brings a human-centered approach to her work that is rooted in empathy, emotional intelligence, and a commitment to inclusive excellence.
Since joining our faculty in 2022, Dr. Theárd has demonstrated exceptional leadership, launching the UW School of Medicine’s LEAD UP program to support trainee development across departments. “LEAD UP is about leadership enrichment,” she says. “It’s also about understanding your cultural wealth and professional identity development.”
Currently an Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Fellow at Drexel University, she also serves as vice president of education and scientific affairs for the Society of Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care (SNACC).
When asked what motivates her, Dr. Theárd shared, “I want patient care to be more equitable, research to be more inclusive, and medical education to be more effective for everyone, including those who are underrepresented in medicine.” Her vision of EDI is one where it is no longer a separate initiative, but a natural part of how we train, collaborate, and care for one another.
Dr. Theárd describes her leadership philosophy as “relationship-driven,” emphasizing the importance of creating safe, supportive environments for both patients and trainees. Her clinical background in neuroanesthesiology and her experience managing anesthesia for awake craniotomies have shaped her belief in the power of interpersonal connection, even in the most vulnerable moments.
Department Chair Dr. G. Burkhard Mackensen announced the appointment on July 8, stating, “Although Dr. Theárd has been with us for just three years, she has already emerged as a constant advocate for students, trainees, CRNAs, and faculty. I look forward to working closely with her as we continue to lead equity and inclusion efforts for our patients, employees, and learners at UW Medicine.”
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Theárd on this well-deserved appointment!
