About the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology Fellowship
The Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology (PCA) Fellowship at Seattle Children’s Hospital is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program for an Acting Instructor. Our program provides clinical experience and associated didactics that allow program graduates to function at a consultant level in all aspects of pediatric cardiac anesthesiology. This is a special clinical track in the University of Washington faculty-fellow program intended to teach graduates of an ACGME-accredited Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship program consultant level proficiency in cardiac anesthesia for neonates, infants and children.
PCA fellows participate in a broad range of clinical, academic, and research activities throughout their 12-month appointment in our program.
Education
Didactic education
PCA fellows will:
- Participate in required department faculty meetings.
- Create and present a lecture or research results covering a topic or case relevant to pediatric cardiac anesthesiology at the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology weekly meeting.
- Attend weekly cardiac didactic sessions with the pediatric anesthesiology fellows and present at least one didactic session to the pediatric anesthesiology fellows.
- Attend weekly departmental meetings and education sessions, including the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology Division QI meetings.
- Participate in our faculty fellowship seminar program (quarterly evening seminars).
Clinical experience
PCA fellows dedicate 60% of their time to the fellowship program and 40% of their time as general OR attendings. We schedule rotations in one- to two-week blocks that include pediatric cardiac anesthesiology, pediatric cardiac perfusion, pediatric echocardiography and diagnostic imaging, pediatric cardiac intensive care, and research.
Call responsibility for the general pediatric anesthesiology service begins in the third month of the faculty fellowship.
Research
PCA fellows develop research acumen in their first year. We expect our fellows to:
- Identify a research project and a research mentor.
- Complete one of the following:
- Conduct one research project during the first year of PCA fellowship, with the goal of at least one abstract prepared and delivered at the departmental academic evening and, if accepted, at a national meeting (for example: SPA, CCAS, ASA). Submit abstract for publication in a reputable journal if possible.
- Initiate a larger, longer-term research project. This project must demonstrate academic productivity, including abstract presentation locally and nationally, as well as publication in a reputable journal when the research is completed (no timeline requirement).
Teaching
As part of academic development, PCA fellows are expected to:
- Create and present a lecture or research results covering a topic or case relevant to pediatric cardiac anesthesiology at the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology weekly meeting.
- Attend weekly cardiac didactic sessions with the pediatric anesthesiology fellows and present at least one didactic session to the pediatric anesthesiology fellows.
- Attend weekly departmental meetings and education sessions, including the Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesiology Division QI meetings.
