UW TelePain Online Course: Chronic Pain Foundations

We are building this curriculum sequentially, rolling out modules as they are completed. Module 1-3 are currently available to providers, and Modules 4 & 5 are in development with anticipated release dates in 2026.

• Module 1: Introduction to Chronic Pain and Basic Pain Management
  • Time Commitment: Approximately 1 hour
  • What You’ll Learn: How to conduct an efficient, high-yield chronic pain visit in 15 minutes; essential pain neuroscience education to share with patients; how to take a focused pain history; and common primary care pain disorders.
• Module 2: Medication Management for Chronic Pain in Primary Care
  • Time Commitment: Approximately 1.5 hours
  • What You’ll Learn: How to choose and monitor medications for chronic pain; balance functional benefits and risks of different pain medications; and communicate effectively with patients about medication safety and treatment plans, including tapering.
• Module 3: Non-Pharmacological & Multidisciplinary Approaches to Pain Management
  • Time Commitment: Approximately 1 hour
  • What You’ll Learn: Evidence-based non-pharmacological approaches to pain management; incorporating non-pharmacological strategies into treatment plans; and communication best practices to enhance patient engagement in multidisciplinary approaches.
• Module 4 (In Development): Special Pain Conditions, including CRPS and Hypermobility
• Module 5 (In Development): The Language of Pain & Difficult Conversations
