Event raises $13,700 to support global health initiatives

On Sunday, December 7, an event was held at Old Stove Gardens (Seattle) to benefit the UW Global Anesthesia INitiative (UW-GAIN). Thanks to the incredible generosity of the community—including faculty, staff, trainees, and friends of our department—more than $13,700 was given in support of the Endowed Global Health Fund for Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine.

Recently established by Dr. Tony Roche and Riana Roche, the endowed fund helps to sustain UW-GAIN’s programming and mission to advance anesthesia education and promote surgical safety for all.

Dr. Roche, a professor of anesthesiology at the University of Washington and a core faculty member of UW-GAIN, played the role of emcee to a room filled with energy and commitment to advancing global health.

Other speakers included Drs. Douglas Bosibori and Jonah Tischler, who shared firsthand experiences from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital in Kenya; Dr. Sara Nikravan, vice chair for education and UW-GAIN faculty member, who spoke of UW-GAIN’s role in supplying life-saving equipment and training opportunities; and Department Chair Dr. G. Burkhard Mackensen, who underscored the department’s long-term commitment to our global health partners.

Director of UW-GAIN, Dr. Yuanting Zha, and the steering committee were thrilled with the fundraiser’s success. “This exceeded our expectations,” said Zha. “We’re excited that these funds will help sustain programming for years to come.”
