When Dr. Peter von Homeyer joined the University of Washington faculty in 2008, the culture and team spirit stood out to him, and the beauty and community of the Pacific Northwest left a lasting impression on his family.
Now, after a five-year hiatus from our department, he returns as professor and division chief of adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology.
Born and raised in Germany, von Homeyer earned his medical degree in Berlin in 2001. He subsequently completed his residency training, along with fellowships in cardiac anesthesia and critical care, at the University Hospital of Münster.
During his initial years at UW, he played an important role in developing the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) as part of a multidisciplinary team, serving as unit director for ten years. In addition to providing clinical care in operating rooms and in the CTICU, he twice served as interim division chief of adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology, in 2012-2013 and again in 2020-2021.
In 2021, Dr. von Homeyer returned to Germany, where he served as an attending anesthesiologist and associate chief in a high-volume private cardiac surgery center for three years. After two years at Montefiore Medical Center (New York) as chief of cardiac anesthesia, he is now back in the place that, in his own words, has always felt like home.
We are thrilled to reintroduce Dr. von Homeyer to our faculty, residents and fellows. Please join us in welcoming him back to the department!
