Annual Bonica Lecture to feature opioid research leader Chad Brummett

We are pleased to host the 39th Annual John J. Bonica Lecture in Pain Medicine on Tuesday, June 2!

Our featured guest, Dr. Chad Brummett, will present on the topic, “Opioids in Acute Care: Challenges & Opportunities.”

An internationally recognized anesthesiologist with more than 15 years of research focused on acute and chronic post-surgical pain, opioid efficacy and opioid-related morbidity, Dr. Brummett has received continuous funding and has authored more than 270 publications in leading journals such as JAMA, JAMA Surgery, Anesthesiology and Annals of Surgery.

While co-director of both the Opioid Research Institute and the Overdose Prevention Engagement Network (OPEN) at the University of Michigan, Dr. Brummett and his collaborators have successfully translated research findings into evidence-based opioid prescribing guidelines implemented in hospitals across Michigan, resulting in significant reductions in prescription opioids dispensed after surgery—without sacrificing pain-related outcomes. This work is recognized in recent revisions of the CDC guidelines for prescribing opioids.

Brummett is highly regarded for his commitment to mentorship, having successfully guided dozens of students, trainees, post-doctoral fellows and faculty. He founded and chairs the Academic Pathways Committee for the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), and he was recently elected as chair of the FAER Board of Directors.

Alumni and friends of the department, including all UW Medicine faculty and trainees, are welcome to attend! Email APM Communications to RSVP. Please include your full name, affiliation, and if you plan to attend in person or remotely. Once received, a confirmation email will be sent, including event location and/or Zoom link.
